Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel)

Festivity in honor of the patron saint of seafarers

Traditional seafaring festivity held on July 16th where Sitges’ boats depart from the Port d'Aiguadolç Marina in a procession to the cemetery, where a floral offering is made in remembrance of the deceased fishermen and sailors.

The origins of this festivity are found in a legend that explains that the Virgin saved an English ship that was in the middle of a terrible storm. One of the sailors, in an act of desperation, began to pray and ripped the Carmelite order scapular he was wearing from around his neck and threw it into the sea, causing the storm to stop immediately. It appears that the dissemination of this legend contributed to establishing Virgen del Carmen’s patronage among sailors and navigators.
